If there is one season I love the most, it’s fall. Chunky knit sweaters, plush blankets, pumpkin spice lattes and UGGs; all my favourite items, synonymous with this change in season, make their annual appearance. Sure, I have my moment of melancholy as I pack up my shorts and sandals, box up the beach towels and move the outdoor patio furniture to the shed, but it’s often followed by the strong urge to begin cozying-up my home.
A change in décor is the easiest way to keep your home relevant as we transition through each season, and it doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive; if you already have a good foundation that consists of furniture and accessories (like a sofa, dining set, pillow inserts, picture frames, serving trays and neutral vases) it's easy to pull together a cohesive look! At bare minimum, your home only needs these five items to feel warm, cozy and ready for fall.
Doormat
Doormats can give your guests that warm-and-fuzzy feeling before they even set foot in your house. Make guests smile with a fun and cheeky coir doormat like this “Gather Here with a Grateful Heart” one from Coco & Bass or this “Hello” one from Linen Chest. If you’d prefer to go the DIY route, you can always follow this easy step-by-step tutorial from ClaCali. Don’t forget, it’s not just about the looks, you’ll appreciate having that doormat once the leaves start to fall, giving guests a place to wipe their feet before entering your home.
Pillows and throws
Nothing updates a room faster than a beautiful throw and some pillows! Invest in good quality pillow inserts, that way you only need to purchase covers and you're not storing bunches of bulky pillows from each season. For fall, try mixing simple graphic pillows with autumn-inspired colours, like deep red, rust and mustard. Once you have your covers selected, mix in a throw! Chunky knit or faux fur throws can make any couch, armchair or bed more inviting.
Artwork
One item that is often overlooked when it comes to décor is artwork. It's amazing how easily artwork can transform a space! If you already have frames, simply purchase new artwork to fit. There are some great artists online who sell digital art downloads, so you can purchase, print and hang in no time. Or, if you still can't find what you are looking for, commissioning a local artist is also an option.
Scents
Don't underestimate your sense of smell when decorating. It's incredible how scents like apple cider, pumpkin spice and vanilla can evoke feelings of warmth, calm and happiness. These scents can come from everyday items like baking, tabletop diffusers, potpourri or candles.
Pumpkins
Finally, let's not forget about the décor item given to us by Mother Nature: pumpkins! Perfect for indoors and outdoors, there are so many ways to make use of fall's favourite accessory. Use them as a centrepiece for your table, adorn your fireplace mantel or simply line your front steps; the possibilities are endless.
